GST Filing for Traders & Wholesalers
GST compliance for trading businesses — purchase-heavy, high-volume and built on input tax credit.
In a typical month, you deal with
- Large purchase volumes from many suppliers
- B2B sales where buyers depend on your GSTR-1
- Goods moving within and across states
- Trade discounts, schemes and returns
- Thin margins where every rupee of ITC matters
How GST works for traders & wholesalers
A trader buys and resells, so GST is mostly about credit: the GST you collect on sales is set off against the GST you paid on purchases. Two things decide whether that works. Your suppliers must report your invoices so they reach your GSTR-2B, and you must report your own B2B sales correctly and on time, because your buyers’ credit depends on your GSTR-1. Goods in transit need e-way bills, and inter-state sales carry IGST.

Common GST mistakes
ITC claimed from bills alone — before the invoice appears in GSTR-2B — is the most common trigger for notices.
If a supplier isn’t paid within 180 days of the invoice, the ITC has to be reversed with interest until you pay.
Your B2B buyers lose credit when your invoices are missing or carry the wrong GSTIN — and they hold back payments.
Goods moved without a valid e-way bill can be detained and penalised on the road.
Post-sale discounts reduce GST only through proper credit notes linked to the original invoices.
Freight paid to a goods transport agency can attract GST under reverse charge, depending on how the transporter bills.

My buyers say my invoices aren’t in their GSTR-2B. Why?
Usually your GSTR-1 was filed late, an invoice carried the wrong GSTIN, or it was reported in a different month. Filing GSTR-1 on time — and uploading B2B invoices through IFF if you are on QRMP — fixes most of it.
When is an e-way bill needed?
Generally when goods worth more than ₹50,000 move in a single consignment. Some states set different limits for movement within the state, so we check the rule for your routes.
What happens if I don’t pay a supplier within 180 days?
The ITC on that invoice has to be reversed, with interest. Once you pay the supplier, you can claim the credit again.
How should trade discounts be handled under GST?
Discounts shown on the invoice reduce the taxable value directly. Discounts given after the sale reduce GST only when they are agreed in advance and passed through credit notes linked to the invoices; otherwise they don’t reduce tax.
Can a trader use the QRMP scheme?
Yes, if turnover is up to ₹5 crore. You file quarterly and pay monthly, and you can upload B2B invoices monthly through IFF so your buyers aren’t kept waiting for credit.
