Why is ITC different in GSTR-2B? 8 reasons and the fixes

Almost every business sees a gap between the credit in its purchase register and the credit in GSTR-2B. Most gaps have ordinary causes, and each has a fix.
The usual reasons
- Supplier filed late or not at all — follow up; the invoice appears in a later 2B.
- Wrong GSTIN on the invoice — the supplier must amend it.
- Different month — the supplier reported it in another period.
- Invoice amended by the supplier — the value changed.
- Rejected or pending in IMS — your own action kept it out.
- Import IGST not yet matched with Bills of Entry.
- Credit notes reported by suppliers reduce your credit.
- Blocked credits — some appear in 2B but aren’t claimable under Section 17(5).
How to close the gap
Reconcile invoice by invoice, sort the differences into these reasons, follow up with suppliers, and claim only what is in 2B and eligible. Keep a running list — most gaps close within a month or two.
Key takeaways
- Most gaps come from supplier timing or errors.
- Some 2B credit is still blocked by law.
- Reconcile invoice by invoice and keep a follow-up list.
Common questions
Should I claim ITC from my books if the supplier hasn’t filed?
No — claim it when it appears in GSTR-2B, within the time limit.
What if a supplier never files?
You can’t claim that credit; consider holding payment until the invoice is reported.
