What is DPIIT Recognition?
In one line: the Central Government's official "startup" credential — free from DPIIT, unlocks tax holidays + patent rebates + tender waivers + seed grants.
DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) is the Central Government body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry that runs the Startup India initiative (launched 16 January 2016 by PM Narendra Modi).
DPIIT recognition certifies your Pvt Ltd, LLP, or Registered Partnership Firm as a "startup" for the purposes of specific government benefits. It is the single most impactful government credential a startup can obtain — and it's completely free.
Latest rules per notification G.S.R. 108(E) February 2026 introduced the new Deep Tech Startup category for entities in biotech, AI/ML, quantum computing, robotics, aerospace, semiconductor, and blockchain.
Two-step benefits system: DPIIT recognition itself is quick and gets you rebates + self-certification + tender waivers + SISFS eligibility. But for the Section 80-IAC 3-year tax holiday, you need a SEPARATE application to the Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB) — 120-day review, stricter evaluation.
Angel tax note: Section 56(2)(viib) — the "angel tax" — was abolished entirely from 1 April 2025 for all companies via Finance Act 2024. This benefit no longer requires DPIIT recognition.
Choose DPIIT if you're...
- You're a Pvt Ltd, LLP, or Registered Partnership Firm incorporated after 1 April 2016
- You want the 3-year 100% income tax holiday (Section 80-IAC, incorporation window extended to March 2030)
- You want 80% rebate on patents + 50% on trademarks + fast-track examination
- You want to bid on government tenders without prior experience / turnover thresholds
- You want access to Startup India Seed Fund (SISFS) — grants up to ₹50L via incubators
- You want a genuine innovation story — not just a "startup" label for marketing
Skip DPIIT if you're...
- You're a Sole Proprietorship or HUF — DPIIT recognition not available for these
- You were formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business
- You're over 10 years old (from incorporation) — no longer eligible
- Your turnover has crossed ₹200 crore in any FY — no longer eligible
- You have no real innovation story — 70% rejection rate on weak descriptions
- You only wanted the angel tax exemption — Section 56(2)(viib) was ABOLISHED from 1 April 2025, no DPIIT needed for this
What DPIIT actually unlocks — with statutory citations
Every benefit tied to a specific section of law or government policy. This is not marketing — this is what the credential legally enables.
3-Year Income Tax Holiday
Section 80-IAC allows 100% profit deduction for any 3 consecutive years out of first 10 years from incorporation. Union Budget 2025-26 extended the incorporation window to 1 April 2016 - 31 March 2030. Requires separate IMB application (120-day review). Choose your 3 profitable years strategically.
Patent + Trademark Rebates
80% rebate on patent filing fees · 50% rebate on trademark fees · fast-track patent examination (regular takes 3-5 years; startups get 1-2 years). List of empanelled patent facilitators available at zero legal fee to startups.
Self-Certification for 5 Years
DPIIT-recognised startups can self-certify compliance under 9 labour laws + 3 environmental laws for 5 years from incorporation. No routine labour inspections. Massive relief for early-stage startups building the team.
Government Tender Access
Exemption from prior experience + turnover criteria in Central Government tenders (Section 25 Public Procurement Policy). Priority access via GeM portal (Government e-Marketplace). ₹5+ crore procurement opportunities annually.
Startup India Seed Fund (SISFS)
DPIIT-recognised startups can apply for grants up to ₹50 lakh via DPIIT-empanelled incubators. Non-dilutive funding for prototype validation, product trials, market entry. Currently ₹945 crore corpus. Applications through Startup India portal.
Fast-Track Winding Up
If things don't work out, DPIIT startups get 90-day fast-track winding up under Section 55 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (vs 6-12 months for regular companies). Clean exit if the venture fails. Founder-friendly.

Your DPIIT certificate unlocks 6 statutory benefits
Every benefit backed by a specific section of law or government policy. This is what the credential legally does.
Your first 90 days — non-negotiable next steps
DPIIT certificate is Day 0. The real value comes from the 4 subsequent filings — 80-IAC, GeM, self-certification, SISFS. Miss any and you leave real money on the table.
Download + verify DPIIT certificate
DPIIT certificate is issued on the Startup India portal. Download PDF, verify DPIIT number, save to compliance folder. Certificate remains valid until you cross 10-year age OR ₹200 Cr turnover.
DPIIT number needed for all future filingsFile Form 80-IAC with IMB
File the SEPARATE Section 80-IAC application on Startup India portal. Requires: DPIIT certificate, MOA + board resolution, audited financials (if any), innovation note. IMB reviews in 120 days. Approval = 3-year tax holiday.
70% rejection rate on weak innovation write-upsRegister on GeM portal + SISFS
Register on Government e-Marketplace (GeM) with your DPIIT certificate — unlocks ₹5+ Cr annual govt procurement pipeline. Simultaneously identify DPIIT-empanelled incubators near you for Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS grants up to ₹50L).
GeM verification takes 10-15 daysActivate labour law self-certification
File Form S-1 online for self-certification under 9 labour laws + 3 environmental laws. Valid for 5 years from incorporation (not from DPIIT date). No routine labour inspections during self-certification window.
5-year window counts from incorporation6 common DPIIT mistakes — and how to avoid them
The biggest one: weak innovation write-up. 70% of applications reject on this alone. The rest are eligibility gates most founders don't check upfront.
Weak innovation write-up
The #1 reason for DPIIT rejection (70% of applications). Generic descriptions like "we're a technology startup solving problems in the education sector" get rejected. DPIIT wants: specific problem, specific technology, specific differentiation, specific traction, specific scalability path.
Confusing DPIIT with Section 80-IAC tax holiday
DPIIT recognition is automatic + quick + gets you rebates and self-certification. Section 80-IAC (the 3-year tax holiday) is a SEPARATE application to the Inter-Ministerial Board. Most founders think DPIIT = tax holiday. It doesn't. IMB is stricter and takes 120 days.
Trying to apply after 10 years or ₹200 Cr turnover
DPIIT recognition auto-lapses when you cross either threshold. You can't "renew" or "re-apply". If your COI shows 2015 date, you cannot get DPIIT recognition today. If any FY hit ₹100+ Cr, permanently disqualified.
Wrong entity type — Proprietorship / HUF
DPIIT recognises Pvt Ltd, LLP, and Registered Partnership Firm ONLY. Sole Proprietorships, HUFs, unregistered partnerships, trusts, societies — all excluded. Common mistake: sole proprietor applies and gets rejected instantly.
Formed by splitting up existing business
DPIIT explicitly rejects entities formed by demerger, spin-off, or restructuring of an existing business. If your MOA shows an old commercial history transferred, DPIIT will spot this. Also common: promoter's existing business assets transferred into "new" startup.
Assuming angel tax exemption still needs DPIIT
Section 56(2)(viib) — the angel tax — was ABOLISHED entirely for all companies from 1 April 2025 via Finance Act 2024. No DPIIT needed for this. But many old blog posts still list angel tax as a "DPIIT benefit". Not since April 2025.

Experienced team — reviewed by qualified professionals
The Tax Paramarsh desk
"DPIIT recognition is the most misunderstood government credential in India. Founders think it's a "startup label" — actually it's a ₹5L-2Cr+ package of benefits, all backed by specific statutory sections. The 2026 Deep Tech notification (G.S.R. 108(E)) opened priority processing for AI/biotech/quantum startups. The 2025 Union Budget extended the 80-IAC window to March 2030 — huge for late-stage founders. Angel tax abolition (April 2025) removed one benefit but the rest got stronger. Every application is reviewed by a qualified CA from our network before filing. Every innovation write-up is drafted by a senior CS — never junior work."

Common questions
Straight answers. Still curious? WhatsApp us anything.
What is DPIIT recognition?
DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) recognition is a Central Government status granted to eligible startups under the Startup India initiative (launched 16 January 2016). It certifies your entity as a "startup" for the purposes of Startup India benefits.
Regulated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Latest eligibility rules per notification G.S.R. 108(E) February 2026. Recognition is granted via the Startup India portal, integrated with the National Single Window System (NSWS).
Is DPIIT recognition free?
Yes — DPIIT recognition itself is completely free. The Startup India portal charges zero government fees for the application. Our ₹3,000 professional fee covers the innovation write-up drafting, application filing, clarification handling, and certificate download.
Beware of consultants quoting ₹15,000+ for DPIIT alone — they're marking up basic filing work. Our fee is fair market for the innovation write-up quality we deliver (70% rejection rate industry-wide).
DPIIT vs Section 80-IAC — what's the difference?
DPIIT recognition is the startup certificate — quick (7-14 days), automatic, opens up patent rebates + self-certification + GeM tender access + SISFS eligibility.
Section 80-IAC is a SEPARATE application to the Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB) for the 3-year income tax holiday (100% profit deduction for any 3 consecutive years out of first 10). IMB is stricter, takes 120 days, requires audited financials + detailed innovation review.
Rule: get DPIIT first (universal benefit), then decide if 80-IAC is worth the IMB effort based on your profit trajectory.
What is the Deep Tech category (2026)?
DPIIT notification G.S.R. 108(E) February 2026 introduced a new "Deep Tech Startup" category for entities engaged in novel R&D in areas like biotech, AI/ML, quantum computing, robotics, aerospace, semiconductor, blockchain.
Benefits: priority processing (faster DPIIT + IMB approval), higher SISFS grant caps, and preferential access to specific government schemes like Startup India Investment Fund. Application is the same but with a Deep Tech declaration + supporting evidence.
Is DPIIT recognition really free from govt?
Yes, 100% free. Startup India portal charges no government fees for DPIIT recognition, Section 80-IAC IMB application, or Section 79 loss carry-forward. All benefits (patent rebates, tender waivers, SISFS eligibility) come at zero government cost.
Our professional fee is ₹3,000 for DPIIT-only or ₹25,000 for the Startup Package (DPIIT + 80-IAC + GeM registration + Section 79 setup + self-certification filing).
What's the cost of Section 80-IAC application?
Government fee: ZERO. IMB application via Startup India portal is free.
Our fee: ₹18,000 add-on to DPIIT or bundled in the Startup Package (₹25,000 for both). Covers: audited financials review, innovation write-up specific to IMB standards, application filing, up to 3 rounds of IMB clarification replies.
Given 3-year 100% tax holiday can save ₹10L-2Cr+ over your startup's life, the ROI is 100-1000×. Don't skip this.
Any hidden costs?
None. Government fees are zero for DPIIT + 80-IAC + Section 79 + self-certification. Our professional fee is one-time. Only additional cost would be your CA's audit fee for financials (₹8-25k typical for Y1 startup) if you don't already have that.
If you're a fresh Y0/Y1 startup with no financials, IMB accepts a certified statement of accounts. We provide the template.
Do you offer eligibility pre-check?
Yes, free. Before we take payment, our senior CS reviews your COI/COR + turnover history + innovation angle. If we don't think you'll get approved, we tell you upfront — no wasted fees. We reject about 15% of enquiries at this stage.
WhatsApp us your COI + brief innovation description for a same-day yes/no.
How long does DPIIT recognition take?
7-14 working days for the standard track. 3-7 days for Deep Tech category. Breakdown: Day 1-3 (application prep + innovation write-up), Day 4 (portal filing), Day 5-14 (DPIIT review + certificate issuance). Fast, automatic system.
If DPIIT asks clarification questions, we reply within hours. Our track record: certificate timelines depend on the authority — we follow up until issue.
How long does Section 80-IAC IMB approval take?
Per May 2025 DPIIT reform, IMB reviews complete applications within 120 days. Reality: 3-6 months for most cases, up to 12 months if IMB has multiple rounds of clarification. Complete, specific applications are what get approved.
Key: the innovation write-up must clearly demonstrate technological innovation, market potential, and employment contribution. IMB specifically wants these three angles.
When should I apply for DPIIT?
As soon as you're incorporated. Every year of delay = one year less of the 80-IAC 10-year window. Y0/Y1 startups have the best success rate — DPIIT loves early-stage innovation.
If you've been operating 2-3 years without DPIIT, apply now — you still have 7-8 years of runway. If you're at 8-9 years, apply immediately with retrospective effect (still get remaining year of 80-IAC).
What if my application is rejected?
DPIIT rejections can be re-appealed within 30 days with additional documentation. Common re-appeal grounds: better innovation write-up, updated traction data, additional patent/IP evidence.
If we file, we handle the re-appeal at no extra cost.
What is Section 80-IAC exactly?
Section 80-IAC of the Income Tax Act, 1961 allows a DPIIT-recognised startup to claim 100% deduction on profits and gains for any 3 consecutive years out of its first 10 years from incorporation.
Union Budget 2025-26 extended the incorporation window — startups incorporated between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2030 are eligible. Requires separate IMB approval.
MAT (Minimum Alternate Tax) still applies at 15% on book profits — 80-IAC only exempts income tax at normal rates. Plan accordingly.
What happened to angel tax?
Section 56(2)(viib) — the "angel tax" — was ABOLISHED entirely from 1 April 2025 for all companies, via Finance Act 2024 (Union Budget 2024).
Effect: no company (DPIIT-recognised or not) needs to pay tax on share premium above fair market value received from any investor category — domestic or foreign — for share issues on or after 1 April 2025.
Old assessments (share issues before 1 April 2025) continue under old law. Consult your CA if you have pending scrutiny for pre-April 2025 rounds.
What is Section 79 loss carry-forward?
Under normal rules (Section 79 of Income Tax Act), a company loses the right to carry forward losses if 51%+ shareholding changes hands. This kills VC-funded startups where dilution is high.
DPIIT-recognised startups get a Section 79 relaxation: losses can be carried forward even if shareholding changes, provided at least one original shareholder continues to hold shares. Critical for VC-backed startups planning IPO.
Note about Income Tax Act 2025
The Income Tax Act 2025 replaces the Income Tax Act 1961 from FY 2026-27. Section numbers will change:
- Section 80-IAC will be renumbered (new section number to be notified)
- Section 54GB will be renumbered
- Section 79 loss carry-forward will be renumbered
The substance of the benefits remains the same — this is only a renumbering. Verify new section numbers with a CA before filing AY 2027-28 returns. Our compliance retainer handles this automatically.
What is Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS)?
SISFS provides grants up to ₹50 lakh per startup for prototype development, proof of concept, product trials, and market entry. Funded from a ₹945 crore corpus. Non-dilutive — no equity taken.
Application flow: DPIIT startups apply to DPIIT-empanelled incubators (not directly to DPIIT). Incubator selects → SISFS grants up to ₹20L instalment 1 + ₹30L instalment 2 based on milestones. 2-3 month application cycle.
What is GeM portal access?
Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is India's public procurement portal for Central/State Govt purchases. Section 25(1) Public Procurement Policy gives DPIIT startups: (1) exemption from prior experience requirements, (2) exemption from prior turnover requirements, (3) exemption from earnest money deposit (EMD), (4) priority in tender evaluation.
Enables you to bid on ₹5+ crore of annual procurement opportunities without competing on age/scale. Especially valuable for hardware, medical, IT, and services startups.
What labour laws can startups self-certify under?
9 Labour Laws: (1) Building & Other Construction Workers Act, (2) Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, (3) Payment of Gratuity Act, (4) Contract Labour Act, (5) Employees Provident Fund Act, (6) ESI Act, (7) Industrial Disputes Act, (8) Payment of Bonus Act, (9) Trade Unions Act.
3 Environmental Laws: Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, Environment Protection Act.
Self-certification via Form S-1. No routine labour inspections for 5 years from incorporation. Complaint-based inspections still possible.
Can foreign-funded startups get DPIIT?
Yes, provided the entity is incorporated in India (Pvt Ltd/LLP registered with MCA). Foreign shareholding is fine — DPIIT is about the entity, not investor origin. Angel tax abolition (April 2025) applies to all investor categories including foreign.
Note: FEMA compliance for foreign investment still applies separately. For FDI in DPIIT startups, most sectors are under automatic route.
Let's get your DPIIT recognition in the next 14 days.
