Understand the basics

What is GST Registration?

In one line: your official tax identity under India's unified indirect-tax system, letting you legally collect GST from customers, claim Input Tax Credit on purchases, and sell across all 28 states + 8 UTs.

Goods and Services Tax is India's single unified indirect tax, replacing 17+ earlier levies (VAT, Service Tax, Excise, Octroi, entry tax) since 1 July 2017. It applies to almost every business — supply of goods, supply of services, or both.

Registration gives you a 15-character GSTIN, allowing you to collect GST from customers (via tax invoice), claim Input Tax Credit on GST paid on your purchases, and trade legally across state lines. Every business above turnover thresholds must register — many below threshold register voluntarily for B2B credibility and marketplace access.

The tax has three components: CGST (central) and SGST (state) for intra-state sales, and IGST (integrated) for inter-state sales. Rates range from 0% to 28% depending on the goods/services HSN classification.

YOUR BUSINESS GSTIN Holder issues tax invoice Tax collected depends on where you sell: INTRA-STATE e.g. Delhi → Delhi CGST 9% SGST 9% INTER-STATE e.g. Delhi → Mumbai IGST 18% THE MAGIC OF GST Input Tax Credit (ITC) GST paid on purchases → offset against GST collected on sales

Register for GST if you're...

  • Turnover crossed ₹40L (goods) or ₹20L (services) — mandatory
  • You sell interstate — mandatory regardless of turnover
  • You sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, or any e-commerce — mandatory
  • You want to claim Input Tax Credit on business purchases
  • Your B2B clients demand GST-compliant invoices
  • You plan to bid for government tenders (GSTIN required)
Why businesses register

6 real benefits of GST — beyond just "compliance"

Registration isn't just about avoiding penalties. Here's what a GSTIN actually unlocks.

Input Tax Credit

Reclaim the GST you pay on purchases, rent, professional fees, and services. Directly reduces your cost of doing business — often 5-18% savings.

B2B Credibility

Large corporates only work with GST-registered vendors. Your GSTIN unlocks enterprise contracts, PSU tenders, and higher-margin B2B relationships.

Interstate Sales

Ship goods and provide services across all 28 states + 8 UTs without CST hassles. One GSTIN, pan-India operations, IGST on interstate flows.

E-commerce Access

Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Shopify, and every marketplace mandates GSTIN before listing. Direct D2C or marketplace — GSTIN is non-negotiable.

Legal Protection

Registered on time = zero penalty exposure. Unregistered supply above threshold = 10% penalty on tax due (min ₹10,000) + 18% interest.

Composition Option

Under ₹1.5Cr goods (₹75L services)? Opt for Composition Scheme — pay flat 1-6% tax, simpler quarterly returns, less paperwork.

Decode your GSTIN

What each character in your GSTIN means

Your 15-character GSTIN encodes your state, PAN, and business vertical. Here's how to read it.

07 STATE Delhi · 07 AAAAA1234A PAN Business or proprietor PAN 1 ENTITY Vertical · default 1 Z DEFAULT Reserved · always Z 5 CHECK Check digit Example GSTIN: 15 characters, 5 parts 07AAAAA1234A1Z5
07 (2 digits)State code. 07 = Delhi, 22 = Chhattisgarh, 27 = Maharashtra, 05 = Uttarakhand, 29 = Karnataka. First 2 digits of every GSTIN.
AAAAA1234A (10 chars)PAN of the business (companies/LLPs) or proprietor. GSTIN and PAN are always linked one-to-one within a state.
1 (1 digit)Entity number for the same PAN in that state — allows multiple GSTINs for multiple business verticals. Default 1.
Z (1 char)Reserved default character. Always Z. Meant for future use but currently fixed.
5 (1 digit/char)Check code — mathematically calculated from the previous 14 characters. Validates the GSTIN is well-formed.
Total 15 charsThe complete GSTIN. Portable across all GST portals, invoices, and government interfaces nationwide.

Avoid these traps

6 common GST mistakes — and how to avoid them

In 10+ years of GST practice, these are the top blunders we've fixed for clients. Get them right upfront.

Mistake #1

Wrong HSN / SAC code

Wrong code = wrong tax rate applied. Customers won't claim ITC properly. Officer can reassess with 18% interest + penalty.

Fix: HSN code check on GST portal before first invoice. We do this in onboarding.
Mistake #2

Choosing Composition when you sell interstate

Composition Scheme prohibits interstate supply. One accidental shipment to another state = mandatory switch to Regular + back-taxes.

Fix: Confirm 100% intra-state before opting Composition. If unsure, go Regular.
Mistake #3

Address mismatch across documents

Utility bill address ≠ rent agreement address ≠ PAN address = officer rejects application. Common cause of REG-03 queries.

Fix: Align all address docs first. Get updated utility bill if needed before filing.
Mistake #4

Missing e-invoicing when turnover crosses ₹5Cr

Since 2023, e-invoicing mandatory for turnover > ₹5Cr. Invoices without IRN are invalid — recipient can't claim ITC.

Fix: Track turnover monthly. Setup e-invoicing portal within 30 days of crossing.
Mistake #5

Not filing LUT before first export

Without LUT (Letter of Undertaking), exporters must pay IGST upfront and claim refund — cash flow killer.

Fix: File LUT (Form GST RFD-11) at start of every FY if you export. Zero-rated supply becomes tax-free.
Mistake #6

Ignoring GSTR-2B reconciliation

GSTR-2B shows ITC available to you. If your books show more, you'll get notice. If less, you're losing legitimate ITC.

Fix: Monthly 2B vs books reconciliation. Chase suppliers who haven't filed GSTR-1.

Fast-track GST registration (Rule 14A)
For businesses whose GST on sales to registered buyers stays within ₹2.5 lakh a month
₹599one-time
₹707 incl. 18% GST
+ GST 18% · no government fee
  • Eligibility check — your expected monthly output tax on B2B supplies must stay within ₹2.5 lakh (CGST + SGST/UTGST + IGST + cess; this is a tax limit, not turnover)
  • Application prepared and filed with the Rule 14A option selected
  • Help with Aadhaar authentication of the authorised signatory and promoter or partner
  • ARN tracking until your GSTIN and certificate are issued
  • The GST portal grants Rule 14A registrations electronically within 3 working days after successful Aadhaar authentication. Rule 9A also allows low-risk applications to be approved within 3 working days. One Rule 14A registration per PAN per state.
  • Expect more B2B tax, or choosing composition? The standard registration below (₹1,500) is the right one.
Choose fast-track
How is the ₹2.5 lakh limit worked out?

It is the GST you charge each month on supplies to GST-registered buyers — not your sales. For example, B2B sales of ₹10 lakh a month at 18% means ₹1.8 lakh of tax, which is within the limit. Sales to consumers do not count. If your B2B tax later grows beyond the limit, the Rule 14A option can be withdrawn on the portal, subject to its conditions — we help with that too.

What your ₹1,500 covers

  • Full GST portal applicationPrepared and filed for you — documents checked first, so it isn’t returned for missing papers.
  • HSN/SAC code adviceThe right codes decide your GST rate and what appears on every invoice you raise.
  • Officer query handling (REG-03 / REG-04)If the officer raises a query, the reply is due within 7 working days. We draft and file it.
  • GSTIN and registration certificateDelivered to you, with a copy kept safely in your file.
  • One free amendment within 6 monthsChange of address, partners or business details — no extra professional fee.
  • First-return guidanceWhat to file in your first month, so you start compliant from day one.

₹1,500 + 18% GST = ₹1,770 all-in. GST registration has no government fee.

Comparing with a cheaper listing? Ask these first

  1. Is replying to an officer’s query (REG-03) included, or charged separately?
  2. Who chooses your HSN/SAC codes — and who fixes them if they’re wrong?
  3. Is a correction after approval included, or is it a fresh fee?
  4. Are you being charged a “government fee”? GST registration has none.
  5. Will you be asked to buy an annual plan before your GSTIN arrives?

FAQ

Common questions

Straight answers, no filler. Still curious? WhatsApp us anything.

Who needs GST registration?

Mandatory for: (1) businesses with turnover > ₹40L for goods (₹20L for services; ₹20L/₹10L in special category states); (2) any interstate seller regardless of turnover; (3) all e-commerce sellers (Amazon/Flipkart/Meesho); (4) casual taxable persons; (5) non-resident taxable persons; (6) input service distributors; (7) reverse-charge payers.

Voluntary registration below threshold is often smart — unlocks ITC, B2B credibility, and marketplace access.

What is a GSTIN?

Goods & Services Tax Identification Number — a unique 15-character alphanumeric code assigned to every registered taxpayer. Example: 07AAAAA1234A1Z5. Structure: 2-digit state code + 10-char PAN + 1 entity number + Z (default) + 1 check digit. See the GSTIN Breakdown section above.

Difference between GST and previous VAT/Service Tax?

Before July 2017: separate VAT (state), Service Tax (central), Excise, Octroi, entry tax, etc. — multiple registrations, cascading tax.

GST subsumed all of these into one unified tax with three components: CGST (central) + SGST (state) for intra-state, and IGST (integrated) for interstate. One GSTIN, one portal, seamless input credit chain.

CGST, SGST, IGST — what's the difference?

Intra-state supply (Delhi → Delhi): CGST 9% + SGST 9% = 18% (state and centre split equally).

Interstate supply (Delhi → Mumbai): IGST 18% (goes to centre first, then apportioned to consuming state).

Union Territory: CGST + UTGST (structurally same as SGST). Rates are always identical; only the split differs.

Are there any government fees for GST registration?

Zero government fees. GST registration is completely free from the department. Our professional fee is ₹1,500. GST @ 18% extra on our fee (₹270). Total: ₹1,770 including tax.

Beware of anyone charging "govt fee" — it's a red flag.

What if I have multiple business verticals or states?

Each state = one separate GSTIN (state-wise registration). Multiple verticals in the same state can either share one GSTIN or opt for separate GSTINs per vertical (recommended for cleaner accounting).

We charge ₹1,000 per additional state GSTIN filed together, ₹1,500 if filed later.

What ongoing compliance costs should I expect?

For Regular scheme: monthly GSTR-1 + GSTR-3B filing = ₹500-1,500/month depending on invoice volume. Annual GSTR-9 = ₹5,000-15,000 depending on complexity.

Our Growth retainer covers all this + reconciliation + notices for ₹4,000/month — cheaper than paying per return for most businesses.

Composition scheme — cheaper?

Composition = flat 1% (trader), 2% (manufacturer), 5% (restaurant), 6% (services) on turnover — no ITC, quarterly filings, less paperwork. Cheaper in professional fees.

But: no ITC means if your inputs have high embedded GST (like raw materials), you're paying more overall. Do a break-even analysis before opting.

How long does GST registration take?

3-7 working days for straightforward applications. Same-day filing on GSTN portal, TRN generated in 15 minutes, ARN within 24 hours. Officer verification 3-7 days typical.

If officer raises query (REG-03): additional 7-15 days depending on how fast you respond.

What causes delays?

Top causes: (1) address mismatch across PAN/utility bill/rent agreement, (2) blurred document scans, (3) wrong HSN/SAC selection, (4) unresponsive to officer queries within 7 days, (5) high-risk business classifications requiring physical verification.

We pre-empt all of these in our doc review before filing.

Can I start selling before I get GSTIN?

No — issuing GST invoices without a GSTIN is fraud. But you can operate without GST if under threshold. Once you cross ₹40L (goods) or ₹20L (services), you have 30 days to register.

For marketplace sellers: Amazon/Flipkart/Meesho won't list you without GSTIN, so register first.

What if my application is rejected?

Officer issues Form GST REG-03 with specific queries. You get 7 days to respond via REG-04. Officer then either approves or issues REG-05 (rejection).

Rejection reasons are usually fixable — we handle full REG-03/04 response cycle. If rejected outright, we re-file with corrections at no extra charge.

What returns do I need to file?

Regular scheme: GSTR-1 (outward, by 11th monthly) + GSTR-3B (summary + tax payment, by 20th) + GSTR-9 (annual, by 31 Dec).

Composition: CMP-08 (quarterly, by 18th) + GSTR-4 (annual).

QRMP: GSTR-1 + 3B quarterly, monthly tax payment via challan.

Late filing penalty?

Late fee: ₹50 per day per return (₹20 for nil returns) — capped at ₹5,000. Plus 18% p.a. interest on unpaid tax.

GSTR-1 not filed = you can't file GSTR-3B. Chain breaks. Your buyers can't claim ITC on your invoices. Chase this immediately.

Do I need e-invoicing?

Mandatory if aggregate turnover > ₹5 crore in any preceding FY (as of 2025). Below that: optional.

E-invoice requires generating IRN (Invoice Reference Number) via portal before issuing invoice. B2C exempt. B2B invoices without IRN are invalid — recipient can't claim ITC.

What is GST audit (GSTR-9C)?

Reconciliation statement mandatory for taxpayers with aggregate turnover > ₹5 crore. Self-certified since FY 2020-21 (no CA attestation required from FY21 onwards, but still needs thorough preparation).

Due 31 December for previous FY. Reconciles books, GSTR-3B, GSTR-1, and 2A/2B. We handle this comprehensively.

Do freelancers / consultants need GST?

Only if gross receipts cross ₹20L (₹10L in special category states). Below that: optional. Above: mandatory within 30 days.

Freelancers exporting services to foreign clients: can register + file LUT to zero-rate exports and claim ITC on domestic expenses. Very common for IT/consulting freelancers.

What about e-commerce sellers?

Mandatory registration regardless of turnover — from your first ₹1 of sale on Amazon/Flipkart/Meesho. Threshold exemption doesn't apply.

Additionally, marketplaces deduct TCS at 1% (0.5% CGST + 0.5% SGST) on your net taxable value, credited to your GST account.

Can I get GST refund for exports?

Yes — exports are zero-rated. Two routes: (1) Pay IGST, claim refund via GSTR-1 (auto-refund typically 60-90 days); (2) File LUT (RFD-11) at FY start, export without paying IGST, claim refund of accumulated ITC on inputs.

Route 2 is usually better for cash flow. We file LUT for all exporter clients.

What if I want to cancel GST registration?

Voluntary cancellation via Form GST REG-16 if you: closed business, turnover fell below threshold and want out, business structure changed, or shifted to Composition.

Must file all pending returns first + final return (GSTR-10 within 3 months of cancellation). We handle the full close-out.
